handmade furniture and restoration

Welcome to Greg Wright Handmade Furniture and Restoration. I’m Greg Wright, the founder, craftsman, and driving force behind the business. For over 25 years, I have been dedicated to creating and restoring furniture with a focus on exceptional craftsmanship, timeless design, and an unwavering commitment to quality. Every piece I work on is more than just furniture—it’s a story, a legacy, and a reflection of individuality.

Craftsmanship Rooted in Tradition and Experience

My journey in woodworking began with an apprenticeship at Gostins of Liverpool, a renowned cabinet-making company known for its impeccable standards and prestigious clientele, including the Royal Family. There, I learned the traditional skills of furniture making, from precision joinery to the art of veneer matching, and gained an appreciation for the dedication and attention to detail required to produce heirloom-quality pieces.

After my time at Gostins, I was privileged to join Tudor Cabinet Makers, a company that specialised in ecclesiastical furniture. This role deepened my passion for working with intricate designs and historical pieces, as I created altars, lecterns, sanctuary chairs, and even restored furniture for the National Trust’s Dunham Massey estate. Working on these projects taught me to balance tradition with creativity and to approach every piece with the utmost respect for its heritage and purpose.

In 2010, my wife and I relocated from the North West to Hindhead, Surrey, where I established Greg Wright Handmade Furniture and Restoration. I wanted to create a business that combined my years of experience with a deeply personal approach. For me, furniture making is not just about creating something functional; it’s about crafting pieces that are unique, beautiful, and built to last for generations.

A Personal Approach to Timeless Design

At my workshop in Hindhead, I use a combination of traditional methods and modern tools to create bespoke furniture and restore cherished items. Every project is a collaboration with my clients, starting with a detailed consultation where we discuss ideas, requirements, and the story behind the piece. Whether it’s a custom dining table, a restored antique, or an ecclesiastical commission, I take great pride in ensuring the final result exceeds expectations.

I believe the materials are just as important as the craftsmanship. I carefully select high-quality timber and veneers, paying close attention to grain patterns, colour, and durability. For bespoke projects, I work closely with clients to choose the perfect finishes and design elements, ensuring each piece reflects their personal style. For restorations, my goal is always to preserve the original character while enhancing the functionality and beauty of the piece.

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working on a wide range of projects, from contemporary bespoke furniture to the restoration of historical treasures. My experience with ecclesiastical furniture remains a cornerstone of my work, as I continue to create and restore meaningful pieces for churches and other sacred spaces.

My mission is simple: to craft furniture that will be admired and enjoyed for generations. I take immense pride in the quality of my work and the relationships I build with my clients. I encourage every client to be as involved in the process as they wish, whether that’s visiting the workshop to see their piece taking shape or collaborating on every detail of the design.

When I’m not in the workshop, I’m often seeking inspiration in the natural beauty of Surrey or spending time with my family. My passion for woodworking is matched only by my dedication to providing an exceptional experience for my clients.
